ATLANTIC CITY — Paulsboro heavyweight Chazz Witherspoon was stopped for the first time in his career on Saturday night when he lost a ninth-round TKO to world-ranked Tony Thompson in a bout held in Boardwalk Hall.
After fighting gamely through most of the bout, Witherspoon, 26-2, was staggered by a hard right onto the head late in the ninth round. The referee ordered a standing eight-count at the point.
Before Witherspoon could recover from the blow, the bigger, more experienced Thompson, 33-3, 21 knockouts, pounced throwing three more hard, overhand rights.
Judging that Witherspoon could no longer defense himself, the referee stepped in and stopped the bout.
