Chutzpah and Hubris: Mayor Langford Orders 4% Gov’t Employee Raises

The Press of Atlantic City reports that Langford orders 4-percent salary increases for non-union workers in 2009.   What is the Mayor thinking?

Mayor Langford giving 4% salary increases with a $35 million budget deficit is like using gasoline to extinguish a fire. The only thing on the Mayor’s mind should be cuts, cuts, and more cuts. The City has to cut at least $35 million to hold taxes next year. It insults Atlantic City taxpayers when the Mayor hires more friends, creates more departments, & gives raises, when residents are scraping by. There are two worlds in Atlantic City: one where people are getting laid-off and those still employed are earning less, and the world where the Mayor spends, spends, and spends without regard to the hardships endured by the rest of us.

The last few days has been the classic example of one step forward:

—Hosting two summit meetings of different Atlantic City leaders

and two steps backward

—Adding a city office of weights and measures while wanting to add an office of multi-cultural affairs

&

—Giving 4% raises to non-union government employees.

Our Mayor is a lot of things, but fiscally responsible and prudent, he is not.

Mayor Lorenzo Langford,

Spending your money, one dollar after another.
